South Baden: From my homeland I South Baden, on the right side of the Rhine is the warmest region in Germany. Lahr and Freiburg belong to the 4 warmest cities in Germany. In the region South Baden the viticulture, the agriculture and forestry has a great importance. I live 10 km from Lahr in an area that is called the Ried, in Kuerzell and 20 km from Offenburg. The Ried is covered by 10 villages with up to 2.500 inhabitants each. It is today the largest area of cultivation of tobacco in Germany. In former times it was flood area with many small rivers of the Rhine. The tobacco, beside grain and corn, main cultivation product of the farmers is mixed in Lahr (40.000) with tobacco from the whole world and converted to cigarettes. Jamm, a citizen of Lahr and tobacco industrial who emigrated to Cuba, bequeathed to the city the City Park of Lahr. Today the City Park is used as a green destination for weekends. In the year 2001 an exhibition of artists from Costa Rica took place. Offenburg is a district capital with around 50,000 inhabitants. North of it is situated a famous area of cultivation of fruits. "Cherry-water", "Pear-fire" and "Plum-water" are estimated alcoholic spirit products in complete Germany and are produced here. The most famous son from Offenburg is Hecker whose theses was taken up at the German national assembly 1848 in Frankfurt into the state condition. The open air museum in Gutach obtain an impression into the life of the farmers of the black forest of the past centuries. In Rust the European Park established itself. It is the largest entertainment park of Germany and has since 2002 the largest roller coaster of the world. The topic area of the park covers many countries of Europe, which are introduced within own ranges. Freiburg is with around 250,000 inhabitants the "capital" of South Baden and the region of Breisgau. The Freiburg cathedral with 116 meters height was built by the incomes from the dismantling of silver in the Black Forest. Since 1993 plays the Sports Club Freiburg in the 1 Federal Soccer League. The team is called also the "Breisgau Brazilians". In the year 2001 was opened by the association the most modern new generation centre for soccer players in Germany here, an important long-term project to keep around the Federal League location in Freiburg. In whole South Baden one can find numerous places with thermal sources, which were already used 2000 years ago by the Romans as baths.   >> regard photos          >> info main-page
