Tanzania :
From the northern national parks to the tropical island of Zanzibar
The classical route for the northern national parks to the tropical beaches in Zanzibar starts at the airport of Kilimanjaro. During the flight from Nairobi over the clouds you can see the Kilimanjaro, highest mountain in Africa (5896 meters) for the first time.
Arusha is the starting point for different national parks. The Arusha national park lies between the Kilimanjaro and the Mount Meru (4566 meters).
The Tarangire national park is famous for its herds of elephants.
The Lake Natron is close to the Ol Doinyo Lengai (2878), an active volcano and for the native Masai a holy mountain.
The Lake Manyara is well-known for its flamingos.
The Ngorongoro crater has the highest mammal density of the world, and offers food for lions, leopards, cheetah and hyenas.
From here to the border of Kenya extends the enormous Serengeti. The far journey leads from Arusha passing the Usambara mountains to Tanga. From Tanga we reach the small sister island of Zanzibar called Pemba with a cargo ship.
Stonetown on Zanzibar is defined as a world cultural heritage. Freddy Mercury (Queen) was born here. The island is well known for its spices and its history. Many cultures established themselves here. African, Arabs and Europeans determined the life by their trade. Numerous beaches can be discovered. In the north: Nungwi, Kendwa and Matemwe. In the east: Bweju, Paje and Jambiani. From Stonetown a ferry brings us to Dar es Salaam, the largest city of East Africa and last stop of the journey in Tanzania.
